Play Production Reviews

As our play productions emerges out of our need to search for a new aesthetics for women, it is our policy to produce plays that has a feminist concept, are scripted and directed by women and have women characters telling their stories.

Kudiyozhickal

Kudiyozhickal is the dramatization of the famous poem of the same name by the well known Malayalam poet Vyloppilly Sreedhara Menon. Produced in 2005, this play was scripted by Rajarajeswari and directed by C V. Sudhi. Kudiyozhickal is an artistic achievement with the text and design in the women’s perspective. Kudiyozhickal has had several stages in Kerala including the performance on the death anniversary of the poet held at Vyloppilly Samskriti Bhavan, Thiruvananthapuram.

Pravaachaka

Pravaachaka supported with the production grant from Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India, was scripted by Rajarajeswari E and directed by C V. Sudhi. Pravaachaka is a retelling of the myth of Cassandra-the greek prophetess whose words were not beleived. This play was produces in 2007 and participated in the Amateur Drama competition held by Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi that year. It won the best actress award for Athira entering history as the first time ever for a women’s thaetre to participate in the final round of amateur drama competition and winning an award for the lead actress. This play went on to participate in several local and National Festivals like Bharat Rang Mahotsav09, Dakshin Natakotsav09, National Theatre festival organized by I & PRD, Govt of Kerala, Surasu Festival etc.

Aanungalillatha Pennungal

Aanungalillatha Pennungal is the third major production of Nireeksha Women’s Theatre and was supported with the production grant from Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India. It participated in the the Amateur Drama competition held by Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi in 2010 and won the Best Director award for C V Sudhi besides Best costume & make up. The play based on the novella ‘Women without Men’ by the Iranian author Shahrnush Parsipur, was scripted by Rajarajeswari E and directed by C V Sudhi. Aanungalillatha Pennungal performed at the International Theatre Festival ITFOK2010 held at Thrissur and Natyotsav-2011 held by Directorate of Arts & Culture, Government of Goa as well as several festivals in the State.

The Troll

The Troll scripted by Rajarajeswari has as its theme a women whose identity gets enmeshed with her id in the SNS. Directed by C V Sudhi, The Troll was initially staged as a short play at M G University, Department of Gandhian Studies as part of a national seminar in 2011. It was again redsigned and produced and performed at Nireeksha Theatre with support of the production grant from Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India in March 2012.

Nizhalukalde Manam

Nizhalukalde Manam is a short play of 45 minutes duration that is scripted and directed by Rajarajeswari E and brought the director C V Sudhi on stage. This play travels through the memories of a mother and daughter whose thoughts intersect across space and time. The play opened for the short play competition held by Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi and won the third best play award.

Echo of the Day

A new genre of theatre was experimented by Nireeksha first for the Gowry Art Institute, Thiruvananthapuram and then for Daffodils, Thiruvananthapurm. This was Art echoing Art and was based on the paintings and poems by artist Sajitha Sankar. This performance uses space within it rather than use space to perform. Each element in the landscape gets integrated into this eco-performance.
This play which is a solo performance by Sreeletha, performed at Vyloppilly Samskriti Bhavan on 4th December 2010 as well as participated in the National Theatre Festival organized by I & PRD, Government of Kerala on 2nd April 2011.
